The first thing people get to know about me is that I’m a tea addict. I’m also addicted to writing, and luckily these two things go pretty neatly together. When I’m not obsessing about drinking tea and writing, I’m a tutor, editor and the author of The Bycatch Principle, a conspiracy thriller with a central protagonist that my younger self is more than a little in love with. When I was signing a copy of The Bycatch Principle for a friend of 55 years (that makes me feel very old) she recalled the mornings when we would walk together to school, each with our head buried in our own book, which in my case was probably a ‘Famous Five’ novel.
“How come it’s taken you all these years to publish a book?” she asked.
To which I muttered, “The need to work and the urge to travel, probably.”
But as you can see, I got there eventually.

These days my life is all about writing in one form or another. I’m either thinking about it, doing it, or teaching others to do it. I’m currently working on two big projects. One is another speculative thriller set in the very near future and again asking the question, what if …? The other one is the first in a series of children’s books that I’m co-writing with a colleague, which an observant reader might describe as The Famous Five for the modern era. Those early reading influences are so powerful, aren’t they?
Alongside writing, I continue to work with other writers, as editor, mentor, tutor, retreat host etc. I run courses online, have several weekly critique groups running, and I love a structural editing challenge. To be honest, I think I’m addicted to all that, too. If you’re a writer looking for support, you can find out more about what I offer either here or via my partnership in The Writing Retreat on my Services for Writers page.

Both readers and my fellow writers have been telling me it might be interesting to get an insider’s view on the process of writing a novel from start to finish, sooooo … you’re invited to travel with me through the ups and downs of what will no doubt be a bumpy journey as I aim to turn a novel idea into a completed book by the end of 2024. It’ll be nice to have you along for the ride.
